To get into the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, the national team of Australia overcame the long qualification tournament. Initially the Australians took only the third place in Group B in the Asian qualification. The third place allowed the Yellow-Greens to take part in the play-off where the Australians beat the team of Syria only into extra time. But the play-off victory was not enough. Further, Australia performed in another play-off – this time with the representative of CONCACAF Honduras national football team. And already thanks to the victory over Honduras, the Australians managed to secure a berth at the World Cup.
In spite of the fact that territorially Australia enters Oceania, the Federation of the Yellow-Greens made the decision to perform, since 2006, under the auspices of the Asian Football Confederation. This decision was entirely justified from the sports point of view. The matter is that in Oceania the Australian national team met no worthy competitor that resulted in lack of experience of meeting with equal opponents. It affected the team performance in large tournaments. Moreover, the transition to Asia favorably affected sports results too. In 2011 the team from the Green Continent reached the final of the Asian Cup and four years later won this tournament.
Australia failed to achieve notable progress in the World Cups. For the first time the Australians got at the World Cup in 1974. As it often happens, the first pancake is lumpy. The Yellow-Greens scored no goal in the tournament, but they were able to gather the first point when played a goalless draw with Chile. Next time the Australians managed to be selected for the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany where they performed more successfully. The Australians could get from the second place in the group and also win for the first time in the final tournaments of the World Cup (Japan was beat by a score of 3-1). In the round of last 16 Australia heroically battled against the future winner of the tournament, the Italian national team, but missed a decider into injury time from the very disputable penalty.
Also, Australia participated in the next two final tournaments where the team failed to leave the group. If in the tournament 2010 in the Republic of South Africa the Australians repeated their result of four-year age (four points in the group), then in 2014 in Brazil the team from the Green Continent could collect no point. However, in the tournament in Brazil the Yellow-Greens were not lucky with opponents. Australia got into the same group with Chile, Spain and the Netherlands.
Far more successfully Australia performed at the Confederations Cups. In 2017 the Australians will participate in the tournament for the fourth time, conceding by number of participations only to the Brazil national team. And twice Australians tried to achieve considerable success.
At the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup in Saudi Arabia, Australia reached the final where conceded to Brazilian by lopsided score. The Yellow-Greens at the group stage beat Mexico and drew with Brazil, and conceded only in one match to the hosts of the tournament. In the tournament semi-final the Australians into injury time sensationally beat the Uruguayans. Four years later, in the tournament in Japan Australia took the third place. At the group stage the team from the Green Continent sensationally won over the current World Cup Champions, the French national team. And here miracles didnot end. After defeat in the semi-final, the Yellow-Greens in the third place match beat the Brazilians who in a year will win in the World Cup. Thus, there are the silver and bronze of the Confederations Cup in the asset of the Australia national team.
As we can see, the main progress of Australia fell on the first decade of the 21stcentury. At that time in team the goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer and the forward Tim Cahill were shining.
Now Australia has a process of generation changing. There are no bright stars in the new Australian team, but at the disposal of the head coach of the team Ange Postecoglou there is a quite efficient collective made by the players from the British teams. Playing style of Australia can also be defined as British — a powerful game with flank passes and crosses.
