Stadium history

Historically, the most popular Moscow football team Spartak has had no its own stadium. Over years the team have met their opponents on different capital arenas: Luzhniki, Dynamo, Lokomotiv, Torpedo. After the USSR collapse and the market economy transition, Spartak seriously became aware of their home arena construction, but for many years these plans could not be carried out. First, in the 90th the club had not enough means for such large-scale construction. Then, in the late nineties and the early 2000th the site problems appeared.

On the first site allocated by the Moscow Government to Spartak, construction didn't start because of protests of ecologists and locals. The second allocated site appeared to be owned partly by the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (ВДНХ), therefore Spartak couldn't start construction again. Only in the late 2006 Leonid Fedun, the Spartak owner, made the decision to start construction and investment. It was decided to build the stadium on the site of the abandoned airfield Tushino.

The stadium construction began in 2007, originally it was planned to finish the arena in 2009. However, the financial crisis interfered with the course of construction. In 2008 construction completely stopped, fortunately, for a while. In 2014 the stadium was finished five years later the planned date of the arena commissioning.

The first football match at the new stadium was held in the early September, 2014 when Spartak received at home the Serbian club Сrvena Zvezda. In November, 2014 Otkritie Arena became the base stadium for the Russian national football team which carried out at the Spartak stadium the rest of qualifying matches for the European Championship 2016.

Otkritie Arena is used not only as a sports venue, but also as a venue for large concert events. For example, in 2016 Otkritie Arena hosted such music bands as Muse and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
