The European Football Championship is the second important tournament held for national teams. At the same time, the European tournament appears, perhaps, more entertaining than the world one. The tournament name makes clear that it receives the national teams of the UEFA European members who successfully overcame the qualifying tournament.

2020 European Football Championship

For the first time it was decided to hold the 2020 European Championship not in one or two countries sharing boarders. The tournament 2020 will take place in 13 countries at 13 stadiums at once. Such a decision was made in honor of the 60 anniversary of the first European Championship. This it a single action, in 2024 the tournament will take place in one country again.

Matches will take place in each host country of the Championship only at one stadium. The main requirement to the arena is seating capacity over 50 thousand seats. Initially, 19 countries applied for matches of the European Championship 2020. As a result, 12 countries were chosen to hold matches of the group stage, round of last 16 matches and quarter finals. In the thirteenth country there will be the semi-final matches and the final one (at the same stadium). The right to receive matches of the group stage and round of last 16 was obtained by Hungary (Budapest), Scotland (Glasgow), Belgium (Brussels), Spain (Bilbao), Ireland (Dublin), Romania (Bucharest), Holland (Amsterdam), Denmark (Copenhagen). Four more countries will receive matches of the group stage and the quarter final: Azerbaijan (Baku), Russia (Saint Petersburg), Italy (Rome) and Germany (Munich). The tournament semi-finals and final will be held at Wembley, the main London arena (England).

Thus, Russia (in particular, the city of Saint Petersburg) will become the host of three largest football tournaments in a row. In 2017 in four cities of Russia the Confederations Cup will be held, in 2018 — the World Cup, and in 2020 in Saint Petersburg at least three matches of the European Football Championship will take place.

Tournament history

The first European Championship was held in 1960 in France. Only four teams participated in the final tournament, the USSR national football team became the winner.

Then, the tournament was held once four years. Since 1968, the competition received its current name (before, the tournament was called the European Nations Cup). In 1980, the number of teams participating in the European Championship increased for the first time. Since then eight teams began to participate in the tournament. In 1992 there was a funny case. Instead of the Yugoslavia national team of which couldn't participate in the final tournament for political reasons the Denmark national team of, which initially failed in the qualifying tournament, got to the European Championship. According to the championship results, the Scandinavian football team celebrated their victory in the tournament.

In 1996 there was the second increase in number of the tournament participants. 16 teams participated in the European Championship which was held already in England. This tournament became the first one where the Russian national team managed to get selected for. Next time, the teams number increased in 2016, when the decision was made to increase the number of participants up to 24 teams. The tournament 2020 will take place according to the special schemewe will describe next.

The victories number record holders in the European Championships are the Germany national team and the Spain team. The French national team won twice on the tournament, the teams of Italy, Portugal, the USSR, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Denmark and Greece has for one victory. The Portuguese national football team is the current Europe Championship Winner.

The Russian national team has something to be proud of. Besides the victory of the USSR in far 1960, the Russian national team got the bronze medals in 2008.
