Who will become the top goal scorer of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia?
The World Cup, the main tournament for four years, brings together on its fields the world strongest football players. Unless injuries happen, we will see in Russia the main global stars, except for only Alexis Sanchez and Gareth Bale whose national teams were not able to be qualified.
Which footballers will score most goals in the tournament and win the Golden Boot — a prize to the tournament best scorer? Let`s have a look at the quotations of the leading Betting Companies:
|Kylian Mbappe Lottin||26|
|Angel Di Maria||34|
|Kevin De Bruyne||51|
As we can see, Betting Companies forecast as the Golden Boot key candidates three most expensive players in the world: Argentinean Messi, Portuguese Ronaldo and Brazilian Neymar. We will try not to agree with them.
Go to the statistics. Over the last 20 years Croat Davor Suker (1998), Brazilian Ronaldo (2002), Germans Miroslav Klose (2006) and Thomas Muller (2010), Spanish David Villa (2010), Dutch Wesley Sneijder (2010), Uruguayan Diego Forlan (2010) and Colombian James Rodriguez (2014) have become the top scorers. Except for James Rodriguez, all above footballers played in the teams which reached only the semi-final. Besides, these football players scored most goals at the group stage or round of last 16. Which is easy to explain: at the decisive stages the teams play their close defensive football with minimum goals, since the price of any mistake in a playoff game is very high.
Moreover, either a representative of the attacking team or the scoring forward of the defensive national team (like David Villa in 2010) became the best goal scorer in the World Cup.
So, according to the last tournaments statistics, either a representative of the attacking team or the scoring forward of the defensive team reaching the semi-final at least will become the Golden Boot Winner. Therefore, it is safely to exclude representatives of Croatia, Mexico, Uruguay, Colombia, Denmark and Egypt from the candidate list.
Now let`s consider the three favorites according to Betting Companies: Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar. The Argentina national football team with Leo Messi as the leader held the very difficult qualifying tournament and managed to get to the World Cup only in the last tour. In 18 qualifiers the Argentineans could scored only 19 goals, approximately one goal per game. Argentina plays their friendly matches little better. Therefore, we can assume that we will unlikely see the Argentineans among the top scorers of the forthcoming World Cup.
The Portugal national football team had a good qualifying tournament and upset their opponents 32 times. Cristiano Ronaldo became the best football player of the qualifiers. But this result is explained by concurrent existence in the Portuguese group of three “football dwarfs”: the national teams of Latvia, Andorra and the Faroe Islands. Portugal prefers to be the second in matches with the top opponents. Besides, this year is not the best for Cristiano.
Now, let`s consider the final drawing and the matches with participation of the World Cup favourites at the group stage. The Belgium national football team drew the easiest lot and became the most scoring team in the qualifying tournament. The Belgians will play with the teams of Panama, Tunisia and England. Another favourite, the German national football team, will play with the teams of Mexico, Sweden and South Korea. It is tough on the 2010 World Cup Champion, the Spain national football team, because at the group stage they have to play with Portugal. Other favourites, the French, will play with Australia, Peru and Denmark. As we can see, the opponents of France, Belgium and Germany are teams which can score many goals.
So, we daresay that a representative of one of three countries France, Belgium or Germany will become the tournament best scorer and win the Golden Boot. We`ve selected ten football players and believe that they are the main contenders for this honorary title: Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Mario Gomez, Lars Stindl, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Antonie Griezmann and Thomas Muller.
